
The winter months are prime for stacking on those unwanted pounds. We stay inside and tend to not get much exercise. That’s why it is important to stock up on the right vegetables which are in season. We take a look at some veggies that will ease you through the winter.
Rhubarb is a hardy, frost resistant plant – in fact it actually needs a period of frost in the winter to produce the best stalks. It is known to reduce heartburn and contains good levels of vitamin C. Great for sweet deserts.
Watercress contains a lot of sulphur. Sulphur rich foods are important in protein absorption, blood purifying, cell building and in healthy hair and skin. Great for soups and salads.
Squashes are excellent winter vegetables. They are highly nutritious and are digest easily. Butternut squash is one of the most common varieties and is a rich source of vitamin A, vitamins C, B3 and B6, folate, potassium, calcium, magnesium and iron.
Cauliflower can be roasted, boiled, fried, steamed or eaten raw. It has properties which are known to prevent cancers in people and is easy to find in the winter.
One of the heathier vegetables which is a great source for vitamin C. Radishes are perfect for salads.
The artichoke contains good levels of vitamin C, folic acid, potassium and fibre. You’ll never have problems finding artichokes in your local supermarket
It’s important to resist the urge to only rely on healthy eating. Get outside, go for walks or even hit the gym. Nothing beats a balanced lifestyle.
