“Whoa! Come off it, folks! This isn?t the Black Death” shouts Boris Johnson.
You have to love the Mayor of London. His column today (read it online at BorisJohnson.com) is all about the recession, and the compelte doom and gloom coming from all sides of the debate. You can’t turn on the TV without finding someone proclaiming that ‘the sky is falling…’ Actually you can, any Labour MP or Minister would love to explain that because the sky is further away than under the last Conservative government, everything will be fine.
But ‘Good Old Boris’ would like to remind everyone that one of the ways out of a recession is by spending money. Not of course spending credit; after all that’s what’s got us into this mess in the first place; but for those who do have money to not be afraid to flaunt that cash, capitalism is not impolite…
There is a system called capitalism, by which goods and services are allocated by markets, and under capitalism I can go to the off-licence and buy five times the cider, of vastly superior quality, for a twentieth of the price, and I can use the time and money saved to buy other things and stimulate the economy in other ways; and by the time the mistresses of the bedchamber have finished trying to make and mend her clothes, I expect you could say the same of the Queen?s dresses.
I’m sure that certain members of the press and political system will incorrectly portray this as Boris telling us to be reckless and spend cash we don’t have, but that’s a bit pot calling the kettle black, isn’t it?
Easy for him to say.
