Four winning steps to a successful Saturday

November 1, 2008 by David

It could be a cold Saturday, let these tips from our Pro, David Myers, warm your pockets!

The best bet on Friday, Rainbow Seeker, scored at Wolverhampton to help soften the blow of two runners-up in the afternoon, meaning a marginal loss on Friday.

It?s an early start for racing fans on the first day of November with action getting underway at 11.50 at Newmarket, but the best bet at that venue in Suffolk comes in the finale with Virtual (3.55). This race is being shown live on Channel 4.

The theory concerning this bet surrounds the price as Ladbrokes are offering 5-1, meaning you get your money back if it finishes in the first three places in a field of 12 runners. The morning line favourite, Bankable, has finished runner-up on its last five outings but continues to be popular with the public, while Virtual in my eyes should be at least joint favourite. Trainer John Gosden?s runners are in good form and Virtual arrives following a career best victory in Listed company in France.

Anyone who has an account with Ladbrokes or can get to one of their shops should back Virtual each-way at 5-1.

The third race on the Newmarket card also throws up a quality animal in Ouster (12.55). This two-year-old learnt a lot from his unplaced debut when scoring impressively at Salisbury last time. The race Ouster took on October 1 last time has a fine history with past winners going on to notable achievements.

Ouster can today follow suit.

There are two other fancies on ?Sausage Saturday? as I call it ? owing to my love of bangers at the weekend! ? with Leo?s Lucky Star (2.40) the next candidate at Ascot. This race will be shown live on Sky channel 415 after BBC?s coverage and this six-year-old really caught my eye on his seasonal reappearance at Cheltenham a fortnight ago.

Trainer David Pipe?s gelding was asked to make up too much ground from behind that day when flying into third but will be a lot sharper today after blowing away the cobwebs. He has to give 10lb (pounds) away to all his rivals today, but the history of this particular event shows that previous winners have managed the feat.

Chief danger will be Mad Max for those that like a forecast.

The biggest race of the day is the Charlie Hall Chase where some of the leading steeplechasers come out of hibernation. The history of this prestige event tells us that those aged eight to 10, from the first four in the betting with a previous victory over three miles have done well. This all bodes well Ollie Magern (3.35), who has won the Charlie Hall Chase twice in the last three years and does particularly well on his first outing each season.

If anyone is interested in a historic guide to this season?s major jumps races, then my latest book ?Racing Trends Revealed Jumps 2009? is available at High Stakes website.
