Corkscrew Spins and Loops For The Last Time

Alton Towers close ground breaking ride after 28 years.

November 9th saw the last time that the Corkscrew roller coaster at Alton Towers took to its 730m long track. Opened on April 4th 1980, the famously yellow ride has a top speed of 40mph and a double helix loop, one of the first in the world.

But it’s age has started to show, with an increasingly rough ride for riders and higher maintenance costs making it uneconomical to keep in good working order. Although it is the tallest ride in the amusement park, and planning laws will not allow a new rider to match the height, the space left behind is going to be used for ‘Secret Weapon 6′ (SW6) to launch in 2010.
