Avoid Xmas shoppers and punt all day

December 6, 2008 by David

Fast forward 19 days and it would be a white Christmas ‘up north’ – 4/1 by
the way should anyone fancy it – but here’s hoping the snow which currently
remains at Wetherby melts in time for racing on Saturday, as there are
three bets there to help put nuts on the Christmas table.

The opening race at the A1 track provides the first port of call so set the
alarm in time for Diamond Frontier (11.40).
This five-year-old hurdler put up a much improved display on his second
outing of the season at Hexham last month when sluicing through the mud to
dish out a 12 lengths beating to Numero Due. Today’s company is nothing out
of the ordinary and a follow-up looks on the cards.

An hour-and-a-half later sees the chance for punters to weigh in again on
Andytown (1.15), who represents the Nicky Henderson-Barry Geraghty
combination that were responsible for Barbers Shop at Sandown on Friday.
This improving sort demolished his rivals in a competitive handicap hurdle at Cheltenham
last month – winning with his head in his chest – and though hiked up a
whopping 18lb for that victory, he is capable of defying the weight on his
favoured soft ground with form-figures of 2P211 when the mud is flying.

The re-routed Grade 1 Fighting Fifth Hurdle is next on the card at
Wetherby and is being shown live on Channel 4, where Punjabi (1.50) should
take all the beating.
It’s that man Nicky Henderson again who trains this progressive hurdler who
signed off last season with a superb third in the Champion Hurdle at
Cheltenham.
Punjabi fits the profile of past winners of this event and is the one to
beat after reportedly showing up good in his homework.

The final two bets of the day can be found on the all-weather where Lapina
(1.55)
will be popular in the opener at Great Leighs.
This filly showed an improved display last time after leaving trainer Pat
Eddery, running on well into second at Wolverhampton over 1m4f. A winner
over 1m6f in June off a handicap mark of 61, she will enjoy this 1m5f trip
from a rating of 56 for Jamie Spencer.

The fifth and final bet of the day comes at Wolverhampton in the evening
where Sendreni (8.50) can gain compensation for a luckless second over
tonight’s 7f trip at Kempton last time.
This gelding was blocked in his run before hitting the front that day – a
move that ultimately cost him – but he has the opportunity to race off the
same mark here with Chris Catlin again wanting to take the ride following
Kempton.
