Argentinian free kick spray to solve ten-yard arguments.
Pablo Silva’s amateur football team failed an equalising free kick in the 88th minute, because the referee didn’t move the opponents wall back. When it’s three yards away and not ten, that makes a difference. But Silva set about solving the problem.
His answer is a ‘temporary paint spray’ that Argentinian referees will use to mark the ten-yard limit from any dead ball situation, thus showing how close the wall can be to free kick. Lasting around 30 seconds, the spray has already been trialled in a number of Division Two matches. From next year, Division One matches will also use the spray.
Could the spray make an appearance here in the UK? Should it? If there was a visual indicator forcing teams to obey the laws of the game, what would the pundits have to discuss at the end of Match of the Day? What colour was used? Let us know your thoughts.
