No Readers Available For £4.7 Million ID Cards Scheme

Those pesky ID Cards being handed out can’t be read. Lucky they have a photo on them…

In case you missed it, ID Cards and the National identity Register are already here for foreign workers and non-UK nationals married to nationals, and their biometric information is already stored on the ID Cards.

Not that this is going to do much good. Thanks to a Freedom of Information request from Silicon.com we know the Government hasn’t bought any card readers.

Identity minister Meg Hillier has said the vital part of the ID Card and National Database is the biometric chip. Which with no readers means they’re not fit for purpose.

And is there a timetable to introduce the readers? “It’s up to each police force to decide when it is necessary to invest in the machines while the technology will be rolled out to immigration officers over time” said Hillier.
