Climber Saved by Cigarette Lighter

A climber was saved by a cigarette lighter as he lay trapped on a mountain. The tiny flicker of light was spotted 8 miles away by a helicopter crew wearing night vision goggles.

Pilot Flt Lt David Moran said: “He was flicking his lighter so that he might be spotted – and luckily the flame was just enough for us to pick up through our night goggles.”

The climber, 25, and three others, including two women, were reported missing on Saturday night after getting into trouble in Snowdonia, North Wales.

They were stranded near accident blackspot Clogwyn Coch – 2,000ft up Snowdon – after the climber lost his footing and fell 370ft.

He used his mobile phone to tell friends that he was ok apart from cuts and bruises. He heard the helicopter and started to flick the lighter at regular intervals in the hope of attracting the attention of the rescue crew.

Another man from the group was in hospital with serious head injuries last night after falling 1,000ft.
Ian Henderson of Llanberis mountain rescue team said: “No one should be on the mountain without crampons and an ice axe, and unless they know what they’re doing.”
