An old portrait of “The Bard” is thought to be the only surviving picture of him that was painted in his lifetime.
There have been several famous pictures of Shakespeare, including the one above, but these are all now thought to be copies of the picture that was revelaed yesterday.
The picture, believed to have been painted in 1610, six years before Willy’s death, was passed down through the Cobbe family after an ancestor married a relative of Shakespeare’s literary patron Henry Wriothesley.
It was eventually inherited by art restorer Alec Cobbe, who had it checked and believes the portrait is genuine.
On Will’s birthday, 23rd April, the picture will be put on display in Stratford-upon-Avon.
With Shakespeare being such a huge celebrity in his day, perhaps he sold the rights to the picture to “Ye olde Hello Magazyne”?
