More Young People Watch Music Videos on Youtube in UK

March 28, 2009 by Nick

A new report released today indicates that a higher number of 15-24 year olds in the UK have watched music videos on Youtube than on dedicated music channels, such as, MTV

The report found that 57% of 15-24 year olds watched music on YouTube, compared to 56% watching them on TV. Amazingly, the report found that 50% of all adults who watched a music video on Youtube went onto buy albums from the artist.

The study was conducted by Ipsos MediaCT. It found that double the number of 15-24 year olds were using YouTube to watch music videos, compared to other age groups. This percentage rose even more for those still in education, with 69% using the music channels on YouTube.

Unsurprisingly, most adults didn’t go onto buy digital music, in fact, 36% of them who went onto by CDs. Video marketing has increasingly become a viable means for companies to make money on the web. Both large and small businesses are beginning to look at how they can make money from YouTube.

The opportunities are also there for new bands and recording artists to reach a new audience. New pop singer such as, Alain Clark and even artists like the Pet Shop Boys have built a new audience through YouTube.

The research follows on from previous research conducted by Entertainment Media Research, which conducted studies into YouTube and business and can be purchased by clicking here.
