Earth Hour – Millions of Buildings Stand in Darkness

Millions of buildings around the world have turned off their lights to raise awareness for climate change.

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is encouraged people to turn off their lights at 8:30pm local time. Hundreds of millions of people made the event a success, and governments will be left in no doubt that the world wants urgent action to tackle climate change.

Global icons including Sydney Opera House, The Acropolis, The Birds’s Nest Stadium, The pyramids of Giza, the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben and the Empire State Building stood in complete darkness for one hour.

Other London landmarks that took action were the London Eye, The Gherkin and the BT Tower.

David Nussbaum, chief executive, WWF-UK said: “Earth Hour was a hugely inspiring event, a dramatic global expression of the strength of support for action on climate change.”

A week before the G20 summit, activists gathered along Victoria Embankment to stage a protest. Their four-mile march to Hyde Park began just after noon. Some protesters chanted: “What do we want? Jobs not bombs”. Many carried banners bearing slogans including “People before profit”, “Money for need not greed” and “Climate emergency”.

Further direct action is feared next week with police leave in the capital cancelled on Wednesday and Thursday, when campaigners are planning disruptions around the City’s Square Mile.
