Alan Shearer blasted midfielder Joey Barton for his flying tackle on Xabi Alonso that saw the Newcastle player leave the pitch with a red card 13 minutes from time. The careless tackle was just another critical mistake by a Newcastle player, as the club dropped another game and moved another step closer to the Premier League drop.
Shearer claimed that Barton’s tackle will be dealt with on the inside.
“I will do what I can,” the Newcastle manager said. “It was the correct decision and now we will be without him for the rest of the season. I’m not happy with him. He’s let me down, let the club down and let himself down. He has apologised, yes, but he didn’t need to make the tackle at all.”
Rumours have been swirling about that Barton’s red card — which will see him miss the rest of the season for the club — could be his last on Tyneside. If the club fail to beat the drop this season, there’s a good chance Mike Ashley could start a fire sale at the club over the summer. Barton is just one of the names being thrown about at the moment as a player that could be on his way out the door.
Newcastle’s remaining home matches against Fulham and Middlesbrough could make or break their Premier League lives.
