A huge, intricate crop circle has been found in a field of barley near an ancient burial ground in Wiltshire.
The latest in a long list of crop circles to have appeared in the county is approximately 100 metres (350ft) in length and seems to follow the popular ‘ying and yang’ theme that has been seen in many patterns before it.
The location of the crop circle, Windmill Hill, is thought to date back to the early Neolithic period (or 5000 years ago for those of us who didn’t study Anthropolgy) and consists of three rings of concentric ditches, originally constructed as a causeway enclosure.
This site is in keeping with previous locations chosen for crop circles with many of them appearing near ancient, sacred places of historical interest.
Crop circles are created by the flattening of crops such as wheat or barley and although many are known to be man-made there remains a certain amount of mystery surrounding those that have no explanation for their presence.
Wiltshire has long been known as a popular site for crop circles and attracts thousands of enthusiasts from all over the World who are fascinated by the precision and supposed hidden meaning within the formations.
The circle season, which is believed to be worth millions of pounds to the local economy, continues all the way through the summer until September when harvesting begins so who knows what may crop up between now and then.
