Tube Drivers To Read Out Shakespeare

June 30, 2009 by Simon Tingle

A new initiative will see tube drivers reading out classical quotes with their announcements.

The drivers are to be given a book of quotations that will include Shakespeare, Goethe and Friedrich Engels and are expected to read out quotes with their daily announcements to passengers.

The quirky idea will be introduced to the Piccadilly line and, if nothing else, it should make the journey a lot more interesting.

The list of quotes has been put together by Turner Prize winner Jeremy Deller, who said: “I often wish announcements were more personal and reflected the realities and absurdities of living and working in a big city.

“I think the travelling public will enjoy some humour and unexpected insight during their journey.”

It’s an interesting idea and may at least make the usual delayed train announcements slightly more bearable.
