First Day in the Best Job in the World

Hampshire man Ben Southall has begun his first day of work as caretaker of a tropical island.

The 34 year old beat more than 34,000 applicants for the position last May, which requires him to live and report from Hamilton Island on the Great Barrier Reef for £73,500 a year.

The job requires the employee, “To explore the islands of the Great Barrier Reef, swim, snorkel, make friends with the locals and generally enjoy the tropical Queensland climate and lifestyle.”

He will also have to talk to Tourism Queensland and the world via blogs, a photo diary, video updates and interviews.

The competition brought huge publicity to declining Australian tourism, which had taken a hit with the onset of global recession.
