Is it Gay Icon, or an Icon of a Gay?

July 3, 2009 by Ewan

Sir Elton John

National Portrait Gallery provides a contemplative exhibition on Gay Icons.

As part of their celebration of gay people and gay icons, the National Portrait Gallery has asked six noted individuals to choose ten of their icons to feature in their Gay Icons gallery, with the caveat that they didn’t have to be gay.

Which smacks of doing their best not to offend anybody.

Taking part in choosing their icons were Sir Elton John, Lord Alli, Lord Smith, Sir Ian McKellen, Billie Jean King, Sandi Toksvig, Sarah Waters, Alan Hollinghurst, Jackie Kay and Ben Summerskill  (chief executive of Stonewall).

Thankfully the Telegraph return to Fleet Street Form and make sure that the video accompanying the article starts off with Princess Diana.

I just wonder if next week we’ll see a celebration of straight people and straight icons. In which case I nominate The Village People.

A tip of the stylish beret to The Telegraph.

Watch the video and laugh at the commentators unfortunate choice of words … “Bottomless Appetite” …. surely not!
