5 Billion Less Plastic Bags Given Out Each Year
July 17, 2009 by kevin

New figures show the average number of bags issued by the six major chains fell from 870million a month in May 2006 to 452million last May.This represents a reduction of 418million a month or 48 per cent, only fractionally below the 50 per cent target.
Environment Secretary Hilary Benn said to the mail last night: “This is a great achievement by the supermarkets and their customers and it shows that by working together, we really can change our habits.”
“Retailers have really put a lot into this in the last six months and the target was only narrowly missed.”
I have a simpler way to do this. Ban all free bags like they do in France. You forget your bag, you have to either buy one for €1 or carry the goods out. Pretty simple.
