Edinburgh Runs Parkour Race
August 3, 2009 by Andy Checkley
Edinburgh is to host a 10km parkour (”free running”) race among its iconic landmarks.
The event, which hopes to raise money for Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland, is so far staying very secretive about its route, though the army have been drafted to construct some obstacles. It will begin this October, in front of Arthur’s Seat, near the parliament building.
“”I can say that you might have to jump over some vehicles and run through a bit of water,” hinted race organiser Jenny Smith.
The race is the first of its kind in the UK and will be open to anyone who can walk the distance. Ms. Smith continued, ”We’re expecting up to 1,000 runners to take part in this new event and help get it started with a bang for us.”
Heart disease is the no.1 killer in Scotland, with chest illness the commonest reason for visiting the NHS. Parkour, l’art du déplacement, began in France and focuses on moving from one point to another as smoothly and efficiently as possible.
