Knee Injury Sees Flintoff Sit Out Fourth Test

August 7, 2009 by Alex Homer

England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff’s ongoing knee injury has ruled him out of the fourth Ashes at Headingley.

The 31-year-old Lancastrian was only able to bowl for 35 minutes at three quarter pace in practice yesterday, with his knee heavily-strapped during nets.

Andrew Strauss’s England waited as long as possible to gauge the impact of practice on Flintoff’s knee, before ruling him out at 9:20am today.

Durham paceman Steve Harmison replaces Flintoff, leaving England arguably a batsman light with Stuart Broad promoted to bat at number seven.

Flintoff will now race to be fit for the final Ashes Test at the Oval, his last before he retires.

Flintoff will be sorely missed by England, guiding them to a 1-0 lead at Lords with 5-92, and top-scoring with 74 in the draw at Edgbaston.

And the 6 wickets taken by Australia before 1pm have proved how much England are missing him.
