Three clubs from the Coca-Cola Championship were dumped out of the Carling Cup by lower league opposition last night.

Sheffield United lost at home to Coca-Cola League 2 side Port Vale with Marc Richards scoring a brace at Bramall Lane.

Derby County, who reached the semi-finals last year, lost away to Rotherham United at the Don Valley Stadium.

It all started so well for the Rams when Gary Teale netted his second goal of the season to put them ahead but goals from Paul Warne and Kevin Ellison was enough to sink Derby out of this years competition.

League 1 newcomers Gillingham followed up Saturday’s impressive 5 - 0 league victory against Swindon to beat Plymouth Argyle in front of their own supporters.

First half goals from Simeon Jackson and Andy Barcham clinched the Gills’ place in the second round. A Luke Summerfield free kick got Plymouth back into it but the home side held on for a stunning win.

Roy Keane’s Ipswich Town survived a big scare, beating Shrewsbury away from home by a penalty shoot out. The Tractorboys were trailing 2 – 1 in normal time before the teams played out a thrilling 3 – 3 draw to go into extra time and penalties.

Watford needed extra time to get through a tricky tie away at Barnet. Goals from Mike Williamson and Scott Severin sealing the Hornet’s place in Round 2 with a 2 – 0 win.

Norwich City showed quick signs of recovery from their disastrous 7 – 1 defeat to Colchester on Saturday by thrashing Yeovil 4 – 0 away from home. A hat-trick from Grant Holt giving Bryan Gunn’s side a much needed win.

Reading and Preston both recorded convincing 5 – 1 wins against Burton Albion and Morecambe respectively and Jim Magilton’s QPR netted five without reply away at Exeter.
