Noel Gallagher has quit rockband Oasis only a day after the band cancelled a gig to the dismay of thousands of fans.
The band’s leading guitarist and singer/songwriter sighted his poor relationship with his brother Liam as the main reason for quitting the hugely successful rock group.
Noel, in a statement posted on the band’s official website said: “It’s with some sadness and great relief to tell you I quit Oasis tonight (Saturday).
“People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.
“Apologies to all the people who bought tickets for the shows in Paris, Konstanz and Milan.”
The relationship between the high profile brothers has had many ups and downs but this latest breakdown has been one too far for Noel.
In a recent interview for NME magazine, Liam revealed that him and Noel were not seeing eye to eye and the pair were exchanging insults with each other on social-networking site Twitter.
Liam told the magazine: “He doesn’t like me and I don’t like him, that’s it.”
The band were due to perform a gig in Paris, as part of their current world tour but cancelled at the last minute.
The cancellation was confirmed in front of thousands of disappointed fans on the big screen at Paris’ ‘Rock en Seine’ festival, where it read: “As a result of an altercation within the band, the Oasis gig has been cancelled.”
The band also pulled out of a gig at last week’s V Festival in Essex, claiming Liam was suffering from laryngitis.
In a second statement, Noel added: “The level of verbal and violent intimidation towards me, my family, friends and comrades has become intolerable.
“And the lack of support and understanding from my management and band mates has left me with no other option than to get me cape and seek pastures new.”
Undoubtedly, Noel’s departure leaves a massive hole in the band and questions will be raised as to how and if Oasis will carry on making records.
Only last month, The Daily Dust reported bookmakers were slashing odds for the band to split up after Liam suggested his brother should join up with The Nolan sisters.
Oasis fans on Twitter have been reacting to the news. ‘PsychedelicAdam’ twitted: “Noel Gallagher leaves Oasis? Gutted, no more Oasis then I guess, they were one of my favourite bands.”
No-one else from the band has yet made a comment.
