BBC3 will broadcast a new drama series centred around the sex lives of twentysomething lesbians in Glasgow.

Lip Service, a six-part show penned by Harriet Braun, will not only hope to become something of a British version of The L Word, but also aims to reflect on what it is to be a young lesbian living in Britain today in a manner that will be “sexy, funny and irreverent” according to its writer.

Ms Braun, who wrote the series partly based on her own experiences, said: “I loved The L Word but it’s high time we saw some contemporary British lesbians, with all the bad weather, trips to the pub and repressed emotions that go with that.

“It will be as funny as it is pathos-filled, because in my experience that’s how life is.”

Elsewhere on the digital BBC channel this autumn will be a show fronted by comedian and BBC 6Music DJ Russell Howard that has already been given the thumbs up from the Daily Dust team.

Russell Howard’s Good News will be a nine-part series where the Mock the Week star has the chance to give his own take on the big news stories dominating the headlines.

The show will be filmed in front of a live studio audience and will consist of seven episodes, a best-of and a Christmas special.

Danny Cohen, the BBC3 controller, said: “BBC3 remains utterly focused on its commitment to young British performers, writers and actors. Russell is a huge talent who already has a great following and it’s exciting to be trying something new with him.”

Finally on the channel, after a successful one-off special, the comedy drama Mouth to Mouth has been rewarded with a full, six-part, series.
