Chris Evans, Breakfast Radio? Is Radio 2 the new Radio 1? here’s who else needs to be hired.
With the news that Terry Wogan is stepping down from his breakfast show, to be replaced by ex-Radio 1 breakfast DJ Chris Evans, it seems like the Light Programme is doing its best to “put the old gang back together’ from Wonderful Radio 1. But who else should be on their Radar [Love]?
Actually he’s still there – was there any gardening leave between his move from Radio 1 to Radio 2? But this is a great example – the format is exactly the same! As are the jokes….
The velvet tones of Mr Smooth were the perfect salve during morning break at school, and “Our Tune” is still a reference that everyone understands. And who can forget the idea of shipping him around the world when the school holidays were on so they could put the Radio 1 Roadshow on and still protect the kids with only 10 minutes of Mister Bates a day. Ahem.
And what is it with those glasses?
It’s a tough call who to get from breakfast shows past, at least on the weekday shows. We had a heated discussion in the office, but eventually Simon Mayo was told to stay on 5Live (because we can’t get Rod MacKenzie and Sybil Ruscoe back), so the Uk’s Favourite Brekkie host gets the call.
Dave Lee Travis
Saturday and Sunday late mornings have to belong to DLT, if only to bring Darts back to the radio (and to upset a certain Noel Edmonds, who can stay in his box).
Bruno Brookes and Liz Kershaw
Yes they come as a pair, and i suspect in their older age they’ll have far more material to work with. Think the crazy couple in every old folks home you’ve ever visited. Now give them air-time. Perfect early morning weekend fun. And if we ask nicely Bruno can read the Top 40 Apple itunes downloads.
Sorry, that should read “Oooooooohhhhh Gary Davies, on your radio!”
The only one on our list still presenting on Radio 1, some 40 years after becoming the first female Radio 1 DJ, her request show will be the Spotify of our rejuvenated Radio 2.0.
Okay we’re going to revive the dead for the last three – rock music never went away, but loosing the influential Friday Rock Show has left a whole in my teenage heart for far too long. Tommy… Let’s Rock.
You want drive-time fun? You want crazy antics and a sense of what the hell is going to happen next? you want to make Chris Evans look like a pussycat? Let’s get Kenny and see what he can do with a studio webcam added to the mix.
Because he’s John Peel, and we all miss him.
