Owner Finds Car After 36 Years

September 14, 2009 by Simon Tingle

A car buried in mud has resurfaced after 36 years.

The Vauxhall Victor 101 was found around half a mile off Brean Beach, Somerset, by beach wardens Dave Furber and Pete Williams.

It is believed the vehicle belongs to fishermen Terry Hart, who lost his car in the mudflats of Brean Beach nearly 40 years ago.

Mr Hart said: “I’m convinced it’s my car which I lost in 1973. We were out fishing and the tide caught us. We tried to reverse the car out but the clutch went and it was goodbye car. It’s so nice to see it back.”

It is believed the recent choppy sea conditions have caused the car to re-immerge after nearly four decades in the mud.

Mr Furber added: “We first noticed the vehicle at the weekend and several other parts have emerged nearby during recent days, including a steering wheel and door panels.”

Mr Hart’s is not the only car to have fallen victim to a muddy grave. The mudflats at Brean Beach are notorious for stranding tourists in their vehicles.

Every year Burnham Area Rescue Boat make an estimated average of 25 rescues.

Just last month fisherman David Foster saw his £25,000 Honda 4×4 become another victim of the mudflats.

Luckily for him he didn’t have to wait quite as long as Mr Hart to be reunited with his vehicle. A two hour rescue saw the vehicle towed free of the mud.
