Harmison Out In The Cold After Squad Snub

Steve Harmison’s Test career may be done and dailydusted after he was omitted from the Test squad, announced Thursday, to tour South Africa.

Nor was Monty Panesar included in the Test squad. Harmison and Panesar were perhaps expected their omission after the ECB did not renew their central contracts on September 11.

The selection threw up several surprises, including Harmison’s Durham teammate Liam Plunkett, uncapped Luke Wright, Surrey’s Steve Davies and Yorkshire spinner Adil Rashid.

Kevin Pietersen was included in both squads, despite not yet being declared fully fit after complications followed his Achilles surgery.

South African-born batsman Pietersen is now expected to miss both Twenty20 Internationals before rejoining the squad ahead of the ODI series, starting November 20.

Jonathan Trott, who hit a century on debut in the Ashes decider at the Oval, was also included in the Test squad.

While Owais Shah, who narrowly missed out on his second ODI century against South Africa in the Champions Trophy, was omitted for inconsistent performance.

And Ravi Bopara was omitted from both squads, despite his flavour of the month status at the start of the international summer against the West Indies.

Chief National Selector Geoff Miller cited inconsistency also as the reasoning for Bopara’s return to the Essex fold.

Ryan Sidebottom remains in the Test squad but misses out in ODIs, Lancashire’s Sajid Mahmood returning after an absence of two years.

Kent’s Joe Denly retains his place in the ODI squad, after impressing as opening batsman throughout the summer.

Alastair Cook will compete with Denly for the opener’s berth, after revitalising his game in the shorter format domestically with Essex.
