Fulham remain unbeaten in the Europa League Group E after a 1-1 draw against AS Roma Thursday.

Marco Andreolli’s injury time volley robbed the Cottagers of three points though as they relinquished their group top spot to Basle, who defeated CSKA Sofia 2-0.

Brede Hangeland gave the South Londoners a deserved lead after 24 minutes, heading home a Bjorn Helge Riise corner.

Marauding runs from Bjorn Helge’s brother, John Arne Riise, eventually told for Roma though as Stephen Kelly brought the Norwegian wingback down in the box.

Hangeland was wrongly given his marching orders before officials stepped in to correct the error and dismiss Kelly after 76 minutes.

Mark Schwarzer saved Jeremy Menez’s penalty and Roy Hodgson’s men seemed to be holding on for a nail-biting win.

Half-time substitute David Pizarro’s corner found defender Andreolli three yards out in the closing minutes however, and he accepted the invitation to equalise.

Everton fared far worse on their travels, humbled by a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Benfica, leaving them second in Group I behind the Lisbon side.

Manager David Moyes could not fault the efforts of his young charges, missing as he was 11 senior players for the tie.

Diniyar Bilyaletdinov finished the match with strapping on his thigh to further compound the Toffee’s injury woes.

Meanwhile Tony Mowbray was more scathing in his comments, as his Celtic side slipped to their third Europa League defeat in four, 0-1 against Hamburg.

Mowbray has given his players an ultimatum over the next two months: improve or leave.
