The Queen Vic will never be the same again, after actress Barbara Windsor announced she was leaving Eastenders for good next year.
Windsor who has played the character of Peggy Mitchell for 15 years said the decision to quit the soap is because she wants to spend more time with her husband.
The 72-year-old said: “I’ll be so sad to leave Peggy behind. Eastenders has been wonderful to me and it’s no secret that it changed my life all those years ago.
“I’m looking forward to the future and I suppose when all is said and done, I should spend a bit more time with my old man, as he’s not getting any younger.”
Windsor all described Peggy as a ‘wonderful character to play’ and revealed her highlight memory was showing the Queen around the Walford set.
The soap’s executive producer Diederick Santer told of his joy working with the star.
He said: “Barbara has contributed so much to Eastenders over the last 15 years, plus countless episodes, and countless amazing storylines.
“She has made the Mitchells the premiere family of British soap.
“I so much enjoy working with her – catching up with the gossip, listening to her stories, talking about the show, benefiting from her advice, and most importantly reveling in her powerful, funny, passionate performances.
“All of us at Eastenders – and our audience – will miss her hugely.”
It has not yet been confirmed how Peggy will leave the show, but a big storyline is likely to mark the end of era on British television.
