A Yorkshireman who claims to be allergic to his wife could be in danger of heart failure whenever the two come into contact.

Darren Young, 45, is allergic to a chemical called polyethylene glycol, which is commonly found in body lotions and creams.

Mr Young, a bus driver from Sprotbrough, South Yorkshire, said he cannot get too close to wife Sue unless she is free of all creams and lotions.

If not, it can cause his heart rate to soar – and potentially stop – and his body to swell up.

He told The Sun: “When it comes to bedtime Sue doesn’t need a headache as an excuse. She just says she has been using body lotion and it might kill me.

“It’s not just Sue – I can get a reaction if I go into a pub or a restaurant where a woman has been sitting. The doctors don’t really know why it has suddenly happened.”

Mr Young’s allergy came to light after he was given a steroid injection containing polyethylene glycol to treat a foot problem.

He had an feeling there was something wrong after his face swelled up, his heart stopped and he had to be resuscitated.

He now carries medicine at all times and is careful about what he touches.
