It seems a battery-powered hamster will be top of Santa wish lists this year.
The fluffy toys, known as Go Go Pets, have been flying off the shelves so quickly that Toys R Us has stopped advertising them for fear of disappointing customers.
Speaking to the Financial Times, Chief executive of Toys R Us, Jerry Storch, said: “Word of mouth alone stimulated demand to the point that if we advertised it would only be bad for business.”
The Go Go Pets come in five different characters, called Mr Squiggles, Patches, Chunk, Pipsqueak and Num Nums. Each pet reacts to being touched, can run around on their own and even ‘choo and chirp’ when held.
The self-sufficient pets can also react to accessories sold especially for them, including a toy house, bed and car.
The business behind the toy, a small US based company called Cepia, are also planning on bringing out a variety of different versions of Go Go Pets.
Cepia’s founder, Russell Hornsby, said: “It’s not just hamsters, we are bringing out the clans: chipmunks, squirrels, hedgehogs, rabbits. We have all sorts of cute things coming.”
If you are lucky enough to get your hands on one this Christmas you can expect to be paying around £10 per hamster. And at least they won’t nibble the curtains.
