Andy Murray’s sixth trophy win, at the hard-court Valencia Open on Sunday, took him past Rafael Nadal as the most decorated player of 2009.

The 22-year-old’s 6-3 6-2 thumping of Russian Mikhail Youzhny was the ninth time the Scot had won a trophy after coming back from a long lay off.

Tendonitis in his left wrist had prevented Murray playing a match in six weeks but he outgunned the Russian who tried to beat him at his own game.

The world number four varied pace, height and spin in preference to big service games and power-hitting. Youzhny struggled from stiffness and fatigue from his semi-final the day before.

The Valencia title used to be a clay tournament played in spring. While Murray is yet to add a clay-court crown to his portfolio, his versatility is vast-improved on this showing.

And Murray’s momentum now takes him to Paris for the BNP Paribas Masters, where he will face American James Blake whom he beat in the Queen’s Club tournament final in June.

Sunday was a day of double celebration in the Murray family as Andy’s brother, Jamie, won his fourth ATP Challenger doubles title in as many months.

With Jamie’s success in Kazakhstan comes a new wave of hope for English tennis rectifying its relegation to the Europe/Africa Zone II tier of the Davis Cup. (EDITOR: That should have read British Tennis)

Novak Djokovic, in-form since the US Open, meanwhile ended Roger Federer’s winning run in his home town with a 6-4 4-6 6-2 victory in the Davidoff Swiss Indoors tournament in Basle.
