Birmingham City manager Alex McLeish showed gallows humour in reacting to referee Peter Walton’s decision to award Liverpool a penalty in Monday’s 2-2 draw at Anfield.
Substitute Steven Gerrard, on for the hamstrung Albert Riera, stepped up to convert the 71st minute spotkick after David Ngog went over Lee Carsley’s challenge without any contact apparent.
Delighted with their £7.7 million signing’s first goal for the club in his 11th game, the travelling contingent, Blue-nosed regardless of the cold, chanted: “There’s only one Benitez.”
And Cameron Jerome gave them more to sing about when he opened his own account with a rasping 30-yarder that dipped over Pepe Reina’s head in first-half stoppage time.
Gerrard’s second-half appearance buoyed the Kop but it was his arrival on to a Glen Johnson cross, in the 63rd minute, that almost levelled; his header struck the foot of the post.
The penalty incident marred the Blues’ second 45 as centre-backs Roger Johnson and Scott Dann constantly put their bodies in the line of the Reds’ surge for a winner.
Rafa Benitez did not defend Ngog in post-match interviews, grateful at least of a point with one win in the last nine in all competitions.
With Torres now out for a minimum three-week course of treatment on his groin injury, and Gerrard sitting out England’s friendly against Brazil in Doha on Saturday, Rafa would do well to keep all of his squad onside.
