Legendary rock singer Rod Stewart has revealed he would have had a go at The X Factor back in his day – but only if he was struggling enough to make it as a rockstar.

In an exclusive interview with The Sun, the ‘Do You Think I’m Sexy’ star said: “If I was desperate and I was getting desperate because I’d been turned down by EMI – I may have done The X Factor.

“But they probably wouldn’t have liked me, I was too rough and ready. I don’t know if I had the character or personality at 16/17 or maybe a bit later at 18/19.

“I had a bit of an edge, I looked different, same haircut mind!”

Stewart, 64, has just released his latest album ’Soulbook’, which features collaborations with other big names including Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson.

The former Faces star has also just announced a seven-date tour of the UK and Ireland for May next year with possible more scheduled concerts to be confirmed.

In the interview, the singer points out how The X Factor has completely changed the music industry.

Rod said: “I didn’t really see the point in releasing an album at Christmas when everybody has got them coming out, trying to compete with The X Factor people and all that.

“Robbie didn’t get to Number One either. The old days used to be about putting bums on seats, selling albums. Now you do it the other way round – TV first. You can’t compete with The X Factor.

“I still think the kids need to brush up on their stagecraft. The way to do that is by doing your apprenticeship.”

During the interview, Rod also broke the revelation that he bans mobile phones during dinner with his family – putting all the technical devices into one bowl.

He said: “I get a bowl and tell them (his kids) to put their phones in when we sit down for dinner.

“They kill polite conversation over dinner when everyone is hunched over, staring at their lap sending texts or whatever during a meal. It’s incredibly rude.”
