U2 are to headline Glastonbury for the first time ever next year.

Festival organiser Michael Eavis confirmed that the campaigning Irish rockers will be the top act at the next festival.

It is the first time that Bono and the boys have ever played Glastonbury, and he hinted earlier this year that it may happen.

Bono, real name Paul Hewson, said: “I know lots of people want us to play. It’s something we’re working up our whole life to do. We really, really want to do this.”

The festival celebrates it’s 40th anniversary next year and Eavis, 75, who organised his first festival in 1981 said: “At last, the biggest band in the world are going to play the best festival in the world! Nothing could be better for our anniversary party.

“We’ve been trying for years… and now we’ve finally made it happen. I’m sure they will pull out all the stops to make next year’s Glastonbury the most memorable ever.”
