Have no fear, Lily’s here.
Lily Allen @ NIA, Birmingham, 24-11-09
While Lily Allen is generally unpredictable one thing about her is certain; she’s never far from the headlines. Whether she’s voicing her opinion on music piracy, suffering a wardrobe malfunction or just picking a fight with another celebrity, you’ll never struggle to find column space dedicated to the pint-sized star. However, it’s easy to forget that she is a number one artist, and arguably one of the UK’s most creative and intruiging popstars, and tonight is all about her music as she kicks off her first arena tour.
Appearing in dry ice at the top of a staircase to start ‘Everyone’s At It’, it immediately becomes clear that Allen was built to play to rooms of this size. She has the crowd in the palm of her hand straight away, and she flows from stage right to stage left flashing a wide smile at her adoring fans. Those on the front row soon love her even more, as she pours them pints of Guinness from her very own side-of-the-stage bar as a reward for getting to the venue early and ’sacrifing their bar trips’. It’s a nice touch that shows how down to earth Allen is, and she exudes charm throughout the show, grinning almost constantly.
Her setlist is a mixture of old, new and a few borrored in the form of cover versions of The Kooks’ ‘Naive’, the Kaiser Cheifs’ ‘Oh My God’ and Britney’s ‘Womanizer’. But it’s her big hits that get the loudest cheers of the night with ‘Smile’ and ‘The Fear’ pushing the crowd to the edge, before sending them home ecstatic with ‘Not Fair’. Allen is a fine performer who loves her fans and is clearly having a ball playing her songs. For all her controversial aspects, she is surely one of British pop’s star picks. Here’s hoping she carries on making music and playing shows as good as this.
