England Seeded for 2010 World Cup

England team version

FIFA has today confirmed England will be seeded for the 2010 World Cup draw and will be placed in Pot 1.

This means Fabio Capello’s men will avoid playing the likes of Spain and Brazil who have also been seeded for the draw, which takes place this upcoming Friday (December 4).

Argentina, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands and South Africa are the remaining teams to have secured a seeded spot.

Hosts South Africa are guaranteed a seeding spot despite their lowly 86th position in the latest FIFA World Rankings.

All the 32 qualified nations will be drawn into eight groups (A – H). The draw will be shown live on BBC Two at 5.15pm.

Former World Cup winners France and much fancied Portugal have been placed in Pot 4 and could face England as could Slovenia, Switzerland, Greece, Serbia, Denmark and Slovakia.

Below are the Pots with each group containing one country from each pot.

Pot 1 (seeds): South Africa, Brazil, Spain, Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Argentina, England

Pot 2 (Asia/Oceania/North & Central America): Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, USA, Mexico, Honduras

Pot 3 (Africa/South America): Ivory Coast, Ghana, Cameroon, Nigeria, Algeria, Paraguay, Chile, Uruguay
