Gibson steers Man Utd to Semi-Finals

Two goals from youngster Darron Gibson ensured Manchester United booked their place in the last four of the Carling Cup with a 2 – 0 win over Tottenham.

The 22-year-old shined at Old Trafford last night in a rerun of last year’s final between the two sides.

As usual for this competition, manager Sir Alex Ferguson tested out some of his young stars to give them more experience – and they truly impressed and deserved their win.

Gibson opened the scoring on the quarter hour mark when his neat strike from 25 yards out found the bottom corner of the net.

Gibson was at the forefront again on the 38th minute when he beautifully curled the ball into the back of the net leaving Gomes, the Spurs goalkeeper with no chance.

Despite dominating possession in the second half, Tottenham couldn’t find a way back into the match and Gibson’s brace proved decisive for United.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s men are a step closer from defending their title.

Elsewhere, Aston Villa also booked their place in the semi-final with an impressive 4 – 2 over Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

However things did not start well for the visitors when Stiliyan Petrov sliced clearance found the net to give Pompey the lead.

But just a minute later Emile Heskey ran clear of the Portsmouth defence and effortlessly chipped Portsmouth keeper Begovic to level terms.

James Milner then drilled Villa ahead after 27 minutes on the clock.

The visitors looked to have booked their place in the semi-finals when Stewart Downing scored his first goal for the club in his first start in an Aston Villa shirt.

Portsmouth made for an exciting when Kanu slotted home to bring the game back to 3 – 2 but Ashley Young made the game safe when he made it 4 – 2.

Avram Grant’s side have now conceding four goals in back-to-back games following their 4 – 1 home defeat to Manchester United last Saturday.
