First English whisky in over a century in shops next week

A variety of whisky-related articles have appeared in the Dust to date, ranging from the best way to drink it, to explorer Shackleton’s stash found in the Antarctic, and even a heroic bottle that managed to save a man’s life.

And here is some more good news: The first English whisky in more than a century will go on sale next week.

The single malt Chapter 6 is made by the English Whisky Co. at the St George’s Distillery in Roudham, Norfolk.

The distillery, officially opened by Prince Charles in 2007, produces bottles of whisky that – surprise surprise – feature a picture of St George slaying the dragon.

At a cost of £2.5 million so far, the project uses barley from East Anglia and water from the Beckland aquifer, via a 160 foot deep borehole in the distillery’s garden.

Managing director Andrew Nelstrop said the biggest gamble came the day the company decided to go ahead with the project.

“Before you’ve done a drop of spirit, you’ve written some big cheques”, he said.

“You have no idea before you start producing whether the distillery is going to make ordinary whisky or great whisky.

“The relief on everyone’s faces when they first tasted it! It is absolutely lovely.”

The firm plans to have its malt on the shelves by December 16, with a 700ml bottle costing £34.99.

Exports will begin after Christmas, with stock shipped to Japan, Singapore, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium.  The firm also intends to market it in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Scandinavia and the US in 2010.

While the staff consists of four full-times and six part-time guides, an impressive 35,000 people visit the distillery each year.

We wish them luck, although it will be interesting to see whether St George manages to slay that dragon a second time round.
