More than 19 million people tuned in to see Joe McElderry be crowned winner of The X Factor, it has been revealed.

Between 21:15 and 21:20 GMT – a peak audience figure of 19.1 million was recorded for last night’s finale - this was when host Dermot O’Leary announced the final result to the nation.

Geordie youngster Joe McElderry beat Olly Murs from Essex to win a life-changing career and a fantastic 1 million pound record deal.

Last night’s two-hour show from 7.30 – 9.30pm saw Joe and Olly battle it out one final time in a bid to get votes and be crowned the winner.

The programme also included special guest performances from Robbie Williams, George Michael and Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney.

Last night saw the average viewing rating for the whole show at an impressive 15.5 million.

This means, in terms of average rating, last night’s X Factor final is the second most popular programme of the year – just short of the Britain’s Got Talent final, which averaged at over 17 million.

Peter Fincham, ITV’s director of television, described it as “a great night for television.”

It was also revealed last night on ITV 2’s ‘The Xtra Factor’ that winner Joe McElderry gained the most votes from the public in the last four weeks of the competition.
