
Ryan Giggs followed in the footsteps of his former Manchester United colleague David Beckham on Sunday, winning the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.
The Welsh winger pipped Formula One Champions Jenson Button to the title after collecting his 11th Premier League winners’ medal earlier this year. World heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis finished in third.
The 36-year-old veteran of over 800 games, with 150 goals, was the first footballer to win the award since Beckham himself in 2001.
Spanish and European golf icon Seve Ballesteros, after four life-threatening operations for a brain tumour, received the Lifetime Achievement award from tearful compatriot Jose Maria Olazabal.
The Young Sports Personality award went to 15-year-old Tom Daley for the second year while comedian Eddie Izzard bagged a special award for completing 43 marathons in 51 days for Sports Relief, earlier in the year.
Meanwhile Sports Personality contender Andrew Strauss collected the Team award on behalf of his Ashes-winning England team. Fabio Capello was named Coach of the Year while Usain Bolt scooped the Overseas trophy as world sprint champion.
The Helen Rollason award went to Major Phil Packer for extensive charity work who will establish the British Inspiration Trust after leaving the army in February and swimming instructor Doreen Adcock, from Milton Keynes, was honoured as Sports Unsung Hero in her 72nd year.
