More drama at Notts County as boss Backe quits

Notts County manager Hans Backe has sensationally quit the club after only been in the post for seven weeks.

The surprising news comes only a week after chairman Peter Trembling purchased the club from former owners Munto Finance.

Backe, from Sweden, was announced as the new manager of the Meadow Lane club on October 27 as a replacement for previous manager Ian McPartland.

The 57-year-old signed a lucrative three-year deal with the League Two outfit but had announced his departure before the players took training today.

He was a close friend and assistant to the clubs director of football Sven Goran Eriksson – with the pair working side by side at Manchester City before the former England boss left the Eastlands club.

Despite being a rather high profile appointment, Backe failed to climb Notts County up the table and his final game was a disappointing 2 – 1 home defeat to Accrington Stanley.

He managed just two league wins out of seven during his time in charge – but recorded two FA Cup victories to see them through to the third round.

However, despite their poor run of form, the club currently lie in sixth place – a playoff position – and are just three points away from an automatic promotion spot.

Notts County chairman Peter Trembling told BBC Sport: “It’s annoying (Backe’s departure), it’s frustrating and we could have done without it, but we are not panicking.

“The timing is not right for us or him because we’ve just restructured and there’s a lot of positivity around the club.”

It is believed Backe was annoyed at the lack of signings made by the club in the emergency loan transfer window period.

Backe’s departure will likely relight rumours that Sven Goran Eriksson could follow.

The Swede is not the only player to have made a swift exit from the club. Defender Sol Campbell left the club only after playing one game for the Magpies earlier this season.

Interesting times and important decisions lay ahead for the oldest football club in the country.
