Looks like we didn’t do what we were told to do

Rage Against The Machine land the most unlikely Christmas Number One in history.

Yes they’re on Sony, just like Sony; yes it’s still a mainstream band (just) and in a perfect world the race would have had more contenders, but Rage Against The Machine, against all odds, slammed into the Christmas Number One Charts and giving Joe McElderry the second spot once owned by Kirsty MacColl and The Pouges.

The record industry decided it was to be Joe at number one… the public had other ideas. Unlike other years which have seen rather diffuse campaigns or last year’s worthy choice of Jeff Buckley, a choice of a well known band and a song that at least gives a vision of rebellion was the perfect line-up.

And boom, just like that, up they went, as Rage gathered the record not just for the first download only Christmas Number One, but the biggest number of chart downloads in one week as wel.

Of  course now we’ve seen clear proof how “easy” it is to market a number one by a single man, you should stop and think just how valid the hit singles from new artists like Pixie Lott and Lady Ga-ga are.

Still, Cowell got the top spot in the Album charts with Susan Boyle… funny that.
