Refused Rent cheque from University fetches £3,101 on Ebay.

Someone picked up a rather appropriate novelty on Ebay just before Christmas – the cheque Gordon Brown bounced on his landlord from his University days in 1972!

The wife of Brown’s old warden, Bill Paterson, put the cheque up for sale on the popular auction site, because it might not have much value in a few months time.

Paterson recalls the circumstances after the payment was refused: “When it bounced I took it up with Gordon immediately and I recall to this day his breathtaking excuse. ‘Oh dear,’ he told me, ‘I must have used the wrong chequebook.’

And the reason Paterson kept it so long? “It was the one and only time anyone has ever bounced a cheque on me.”

Gordon Brown is now the Prime Minister and the man to lead us out of the recession.
