Bolton Wanderers have sacked manager Gary Megson due to the club’s lowly position in the Premier League.
Throughout the season Megson has been placed under huge pressure with many supporters taking a dislike to the former West Bromwich Albion and Nottingham Forest boss.
Last night’s 2 – 2 home draw against Hull City , in which Bolton threw away a two-goal lead were booed off the field, turned out to be his last game in charge.
Bolton currently lie third from bottom in the relegation zone after playing 18 games and club chiefs feel the time is right is to act now before it’s too late.
A statement on the club’s website said: “The decision has been taken in light of the position the club finds itself in at the halfway point of the season.”
The Bolton fans reacted angrily to Megson’s tactics last night when he took off striker Ivan Klasnic for midfielder Gavin McCann while his side were 2 – 1 in front.
After the game, Megson voiced his concerns that the crowd going against him was impacting on the performance.
He told BBC Radio 5 Live: “It has started now to have an impact. It’s difficult for the players to be playing in that atmosphere.”
Megson has been open about there being problems within the squad in terms of arguments and discipline but it is hoped a new manager with fresh ideas will make the club strong again and climb up the table.
Assistant boss Chris Evans and coach Steve Wigley will take charge on a temporary basis until a replacement is found by chairman Phil Gartside.
Megson may feel downhearted by his sacking with the club just four points off 11th position in the table and having at least one game (in some cases two) in hand over the teams above them.
Bookies have installed former Manchester City manager Mark Hughes as the favourite to take the hot-seat.
Paul jewell, Steve McLaren, Peter Reid, Darren Ferguson and Alan Curbishley are also likely candidates for the job.
