Graeme Swann struck twice, either side of Stuart Broad and James Anderson, to wrap up victory by an innings in the second Test at Durban with his second five-for of the series.

South Africa 133 all out (Harris 36 Boucher 29, Swann 5/54 Broad 4/43)

England 574/9 declared (Bell 140 Cook 118, Morkel 3/89)

South Africa 1st innings 343 all out (Smith 75 Kallis 75, Swann 4/110)

England win by an innings and 98 runs.

A correction overnight saw England and Ian Bell lose a single but there was no doubting the singularity of the tourists’ purpose nor their scoreboard advantage from the start of play.

Swann struck first, removing Morne Morkel leg before on 15 with a quicker ball, epitomising Morkel’s struggle with Swann’s variety when strokeplay was at a premium.

Benefitting from the UDRS review, Stuart Broad removed the second of the overnight batsmen as Boucher was seen to glove a short ball down the legside on replay for 29.

With Boucher’s demise went any realistic hope of Andrew Strauss being asked to strap on his pads and the captain made doubly sure when he took Broad, desperate for a fifth scalp, out of the attack to be replaced by Anderson.

Broad was nevertheless involved in the ninth dismissal as Anderson first set up Paul Harris with short of length deliveries with which he flirted, before the sucker-punch fuller ball which top-scoring Harris, with no footwork, chipped to the diving Broad at mid-on.

Firm friends they may be but Swann will have felt the breath of Anderson as he sought his fifth victim, denied in the first innings by a six-hitting whirlwind from Dale Steyn.

With Steyn now preferring defense, Swann duly got his revenge and his fourth five-wicket haul in Tests when Steyn was adjudged LBW to another quicker delivery on 3.

After consultation, Steyn and Ntini were professional in calling the Proteas final review of Steyn’s dismissal though the ensuring delay, however slight, provided some indication the new system could reduce the euphoria of wicket-taking, signaled by the umpire.
