UK host receives critical thumbs don, but the TV audience loved him (and Maria showed up)
As with any performance, you’re rarely going to keep everyone happy, and so it was with Ricky Gervais’ most high profile gig in America – hosting last night’s Golden Globe Awards.
Compared to his UK shows, this was a slightly under control Gervais, but that was more than enough to have the old guard press wonder what NBC were thinking (still, we’ve been thinking that all week, right Conan?)
But the online press, bloggers and fans lapped it up. Here are some of our personal highlights from Gervais’ free wheeling, unscripted outing.
- “Actors are just better than ordinary people. Because they’re recognizable. You can be in the third world, but you see a glimpse of an actor and you feel better,. You can be a child and you see Angelina Jolie and you think, ‘Mummy.”
- “I enjoy my drink as much as the next man… unless the next man is Mel Gibson.” (and yes Mel Gibson was the next man on stage.
- But let’s get on with it before NBC replaces me with Jay Leno."
- "One stereotype [I hate is{ where all Irishmen are just drunk, swearing, hellraisers. Please welcome Colin Farrell…"
- "One thing that can’t be bought is a Golden Globe… officially. But if you were going to buy one, the man to see is Philip Berg."
Still, I think we’ll go with a picture of Maria Carey instead…
