Carlos Tevez scored two against his former employers on Tuesday, giving Manchester City a slender 2-1 lead over Manchester United, following their Carling Cup semi-final first leg at Eastlands.
Ryan Giggs opened the scoring after 17 minutes when he followed up a shot from Wayne Rooney which Shay Given could only parry to the BBC Sports Personality of the Year’s feet.
Tevez equalised three minutes before the break however from the spot after referee Mike Dean ruled Rafael de Silva fouled Craig Bellamy, though replays showed the offence began outside the box.
The diminutive Argentine nevertheless lashed home his penalty and hurried to celebrate in front of Gary Neville, who had earlier suggested Tevez was overpriced in his £47 million transfer to City.
Gesturing with his hands that Neville talks too much, Tevez riled the England fullback to respond with a raised middle finger – not seen by the referee but captured on camera – which will be investigated by the Football Association(FA).
Patrice Evra was also hit by a lighter thrown from the crowd as the ugly incidents threatened to undermine the derby occasion.
Though fans were separated by police and a flare was lit in the United section, Tevez went on to steal the show in the second half with his feats on the pitch.
As Vincent Kompany hooked Pablo Zabaleta’s header into the box, Tevez managed to head home after 65 minutes and ran to celebrate near the technical area, just yards away from Sir Alex Ferguson.
That Tevez should steal the headlines was fitting given he personifies the current Manchester rivalry: a much more even contest this year with City nouveau riche and challenging for a top four finish.
United did threaten to equalise and spoil the script and the blue half of Manchester had Given to thank for saving three times from Rooney.
The first of those saves also saw City’s Nedum Onuoha clear substitute Michael Owen’s follow-up off the line after Given closed Rooney one-on-one.
