Rockers are being urged to join together in the name of Heavy Metal and have it recognised as a religion.
Metalheads everywhere are being asked to register their faith as ‘Heavy Metal’ when completing the next census questionnaire.
The campaign, launched by music magazine Metal Hammer, has already attracted nearly 10,000 followers to a Facebook group and has won the backing of metal legend Biff Byford, frontman for rockers Saxon, who would become the “world metal peace ambassador” if it is successful.
The crusade was inspired by the 2001 census, in which 390,127 people registered their faith as ‘Jedi’, surpassing Sikhism, Judaism and Buddhism.
Editor of Metal Hammer, Alexander Milas, said: ”Like a lot of good ideas, this one came about in a pub and the response online has been overwhelming.
”It only reinforces the belief that heavy metal remains strong in its UK birthplace and across the globe. If the Jedi can do it, then we can too.”
