A large UFO was seen hovering over the house of the then Home Secretary Michael Howard in the run-up to the 1997 general election, recently released Ministry of Defence files have revealed.

The triangular craft, said to be twice the size of a Boeing 747, was spotted hovering 1,000 feet above Mr Howard’s house in Folkstone,Kent.

Observers said it appeared to have been monitoring him for a period of time.

In typical UFO fashion, the craft reportedly had lights around its edges, a spotlight on the front and a disc on its back, which made a “humming sound” often associated with such cases.

Among the witnesses was Sophie Wadleigh, 25, from Hythe, who said: “It was so peculiar, it all felt really odd and I heard this humming noise.”

The revelation was one of a number of close encounters described in the once highly classified files released by the National Archives.

6,000 pages of material collected between 1994 and 2000 also included a report by a policeman who claimed to have seen a UFO hovering over Chelsea’s home ground, Stamford Bridge, in 1994, and a “near miss” between a Boeing 737 and a UFO over the Pennines on January 6, 1995.

British Airways flight 5061 was en route from Milan to Manchester when pilots reported the UFO, later investigated by the Civil Aviation Authority.

Manchester Air Traffic Control recorded no known traffic in the vicinity on radar.
