Dame Helen Mirren calls for an end to Hollywood stereotyping.
Helen Mirren has never been one to shy away from strong words, and they are usually witheringly accurate. So will Hollywood pay attention to her latest cause?
“I think it’s rather unfortunate that the villain in every movie is always British, we’re such an easy target that they can comfortably make the Brits the villains. It’s just nice to say we’re not snooty, stuck up, malevolent, malignant creatures as we’re so often portrayed. We’re actually kind of cool and hip.”
Much as we agree with the acting Dame, there’s something reassuring about a British villain. First of all have you seen how an American villain chews the scenery? Imagine a world where villains overacted rather than twirl moustaches.
Then there’s the fact that it keeps our greatest actors in employment. In a world with more and more leading men (and women) fighting over the pretty boy roles it keeps our boys and girls in a pay cheque!
So long may our villainous ways continue. Maybe Mirren is doing some reverse psychology and looking to hook up as the big bad in the next Quentin Tarantino film… Fingers crossed!
