On Stage’s friend and Madina Lake bassist brutally attacked.

We’re very sad to report that Madina Lake bassist Matthew Leone, who we interviewed last October, is in a very serious condition in hospital after being brutally attacked in his hometown of Chicago.

His brother Nathan, who sings in Madina Lake, has posted the following statement:

Hey everybody,

I just wanted to take a second to thank you all for your overwhelming love and support. For those who don’t know, a few nights ago my twin brother and best friend Matthew was severely injured while trying to stop a man who was beating his wife on the street 1 block away from my apartment. Matthew was all alone and managed to save the girl but got beaten pretty badly in the process. The couple then left him laying unconscious in the middle of the street. Both have been subsequently arrested.

Matthew is currently in the hospital recovering from brain surgery, a fractured skull, jaw broken in 2 places, a broken nose etc. The doctors have removed a part of his skull to allow for the swelling in his brain to subside and we’re currently waiting for leakage from a hematoma to stop. After 3 days the prognosis is looking better.

I’ve been next to him throughout the entire process and as impossible as it is to see him go through it, I’ve seen a strength I didn’t know existed and i’m so proud of him. As of this morning he recognized me and is able to have minor conversation and move around. When something like this happens people are often inclined to despise humanity but in this case, the outpouring of love and support from friends, family, fans, neighbors, etc. has far overshadowed that notion and has proven to us that although there are certainly some evil people in the world, there are far more amazing people. Thank you all again, we love and appreciate you more than you’ll know. Be safe and optimistic and I’ll keep you updated as often as possible.

(on behalf of matthew, the leone family and our ML family)

On Stage would like send Matthew as many positive thoughts as possible and we really hope he can recover in time to play Sonisphere later this month. We also want to send our best wishes to Nathan, the rest of the Leone family and everyone involved with Madina Lake.

If you would like send a message to Matthew either send a message to rrguest@roadrunnerrecords.co.uk with ‘A Message for Matthew’ in the title, or leave something in the comments box here and we’ll make sure it gets passed on to Matthew.

  1. My thoughts and prayers are with the Leone’s!!! You did such an AMAZING thing to help this poor women from being beaten, put YOUR life at risk to help her and got left by BOTH!!!! Unfathomable. They both deserve felony charges and major jail time!!! What a disgrace of humanity. I would have done the same thing, Matt!

You are a true hero and Good Samaritan. I will be praying for your quick recovery. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

May God be by your side to get better!!!

  2. I hope you are feeling better man. What you did not many people would have enough guts to do but you went beyond most people and helped. Things did not go very well but you didn’t know the guy was going to be an ass and attack you. Matt your an extremely nice person and I wish you a speedy recovery.

  3. You did the right thing and were attacked. That is so awful. I pray that you will recover soon and fully. Best wishes and love to all the family xx

  4. You did such an insanely amazing thing that so few people would have the guts to do. I often look to people like you for inspiration when I imagine myself ina situation like that and you really are a hero. You not only went out of your way for a complete stranger but put yourself in harm’s way to do so.

Fun fact: The first place I had heard about this incident was a site called GivesMeHope.com and you definitely deserve a place on it.
